Charisse started Abantu as a radio show on No Signal in 2020. Representing the vastness of Southern African music and culture, at the cusp of Amapiano becoming a global phenomenon. Since then, it has grown into an event series, record label, cultural hub and international community.

Munich based DJ, Ropa is the voice behind our community newsletters, and at the heart of Abantu’s ethos. Her Soultec series on YouTube, showcases her curious and eclectic approach to weaving through Afrotech, 3-step, Gqom and R&B.

Neelam - Creative Producer
Neelam aka AsandaLDN is a DJ and Deep House enthusiast, with a background in Diversity and Inclusion work, and event production. She hosts a weekly show on EXT radio called “Daring Deeply,” inspired by Brene Brown’s ‘Daring Greatly’ book.

Bernadette - Project Manager
The backbone of the team, Bernadette keeps Abantu flowing. With a gift for organisation and a deeply people-centred approach, she brings a sharp eye to everything from planning to execution, ensuring every moving part feels connected. Rooted in her love of African music, she helps shape the spirit and structure that allow Abantu to grow.

Josephine Gyasi - Contributor
Bristolian with Ghanaian roots, Josephine Gyasi is a DJ and creative producer with a penchant for bass-heavy club sounds from across the continent.
‘Heal Good Music’ is her monthly show on Oroko radio; taking us on journey through the remedial power of music.

About Abantu
Founded by Artist, DJ and Curator, Charisse C, during the 2020 lockdown; Abantu began as a bi-weekly show on No Signal radio. It has since evolved into a cultural hub, party and record label. Known for its stellar curation and dedicated to representing the vastness of Southern Africa, with a combined effort of music and storytelling.
Abantu, which translates to “people” in several Nguni languages, is coined after a heartfelt investment in a people-first ethos. Abantu is cultivating an international community whilst building an archival legacy. Insistent on boundary pushing artistry, presented with a high level of care and quality.
We are a small team passionate about building meaningful digital and IRL spaces, with a growing audience and a vision for long-term impact. We’re looking for someone who wants to be part of this journey and help shape Abantu’s online identity.
The Role
We’re looking for a part-time Social Media Manager who can keep our Instagram and TikTok active, consistent, and aligned with Abantu’s voice. The role is for someone interested in shaping the online identity of a music platform. A person who enjoys social media, content creation, telling engaging stories, and connecting with people.
This role is ideal for someone who loves Southern African music, and wants to be a part of a nurturing a community that is a centred around it. If you’re looking to build a portfolio and experience working in music, you’ll get a lot out of this role.
You’ll be working closely with Charisse C on creative direction and creating content, and our Community Lead Ropa who runs the newsletter. Ensuring consistency and creativity in sharing Abantu events, music, and podcast episodes with our community.
The role is up to 7 hours a week, you can spread these hours out however you need to. We work in a flexible and collaborative style; understanding that each of us have different schedules and independent needs in this collaborative environment.
We meet once a week on Tuesday evenings via Google Meet.
Responsibilities
Plan, schedule and publish weekly content for Instagram and TikTok.
Maintain a consistent visual style, tone, and storytelling voice.
Capture, edit, or repurpose short-form video content (Reels/TikToks).
Engage with followers and help grow an authentic community.
Collaborate with the team on themes, campaigns, and content ideas.
Track basic insights (views, likes, engagement, follower growth, etc).
Stay aware of trends that fit Abantu’s identity and values.
What We’re looking for
A collaborative mindset — we’re building this together.
A keen interest in Southern African music and culture.
A keen Interest in genres like Amapiano, Gqom, Afrohouse, 3-Step.
Strong familiarity with Instagram & TikTok culture and formats.
Basic knowledge of the Adobe suite, mainly Photoshop, Premiere Pro and Adobe Express.
Basic video editing skills (mobile editing is totally fine).
An eye for aesthetic consistency and storytelling.
Proactive, reliable, and comfortable working independently.
Willingness to experiment, iterate, and help grow a brand.
